A Y type strainer is a compact and efficient pre-filtration solution that protects pumps, valves and measurement equipment in your pipeline from solid particles. When correctly selected, a Y type filter ensures process continuity with low pressure drop, easy maintenance and a long service life.

Y Type Strainer

What Is a Y Type Strainer?

A Y strainer is equipped with a screen (mesh) element housed in a “Y”-shaped body to capture metal shavings, sand, corrosion particles and other solids in the fluid. It requires minimum space on the line and is suitable for both horizontal and vertical installation. With its simple yet effective design, it shortens maintenance times and protects critical equipment.

Thanks to various material and end-connection options (cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel; flanged, threaded, welded), it offers a wide range of use in water, steam, gas, chemical lines and heating/cooling circuits. It can be customised with different mesh sizes according to the filtration accuracy required by your process.

Y Type Dirt Strainer: Operating Principle and Design

A Y type dirt strainer retains particles with a screen element (typically stainless-steel woven mesh) positioned in the flow path. The screen can be removed and cleaned through the plug/cover providing access to the lower leg of the body, which allows maintenance without dismantling the pipeline.

The flow direction is indicated by an arrow on the body. The screen element must not be installed in reverse; otherwise, pressure drop will increase and filtration efficiency will decrease. The maintenance interval depends on the contamination load of the fluid, mesh size and flow rate. Using a differential pressure gauge helps you determine the correct cleaning interval.

Installation, Operation and Maintenance Recommendations

During installation, check the flow direction and make sure the screen is positioned downward. Leave sufficient access to the drain plug; where possible, replace the plug with a small valve to speed up cleaning. Flushing the line before initial start-up reduces the dirt load on the strainer.

In operation, monitoring differential pressure clarifies the cleaning intervals. Excessive pressure loss indicates clogging. During cleaning, remove the screen before backwashing and perform mechanical cleaning. After maintenance, pay close attention to tightening torques and gasket integrity to ensure leak-tightness.
